Pogacar, a two-time Tour de France champion, competed in the eight-day race for the first time and won his third stage this year.

He finished alone to beat France's David Gaudu by 53 seconds, with Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard in third.

"It was always my dream to win Paris-Nice," said Pogacar, 24.

"The competition here was really huge. To be alongside David Gaudu and Jonas Vingegaard on the podium is special."

In an effort to win back the Tour championship he lost to Vingegaard in 2022, Pogacar has changed his schedule for this season.

During the final climb of the difficult stage in the Nice wilderness on Sunday, the UAE Team Emirates rider, who was in the lead in Paris-Nice, broke away alone.

The Monaco native remarked, "I really know these roads. "On the final hill, I was fully aware of how my legs felt. Today, I did pretty well in math. I did a wonderful calculation."

Stages 4, 7, and 8 were won by Pogacar, Stage 6 was abandoned due to dangerously high wind speeds between Tourves and La Colle-sur-Loup.

Roglic triumphed in the Paris-Nice race last year, while Pogacar won the Tirreno-Adriatico in 2021 and 2022.

Roles were inverted this year, though, as Jasper Philipsen won the last stage in a sprint while Roglic, 33, took first place in the Tirreno-Adriatico after finishing comfortably in the group.

The Italian seven-stage race was the Belgian's second stage victory of the year, but Roglic had won the previous three stages to put him on track for a second overall victory after winning in 2019.

After winning the Strade Bianche last weekend, Tom Pidcock had a challenging week that came to an end when he crashed out of the race early in the stage.
