Sri Lanka edge to two-run victory over Ireland in warm-up game

In their T20 World Cup warm-up match, Sri Lanka defeated Ireland by two runs after a thrilling final over.

Sri Lanka reached 149-5 thanks to a half-century from Harshitha Samarawickrama.

Arlene Kelly scored a commendable 30 from 17 balls, but Sri Lanka claimed two wickets in the final over to dismiss Ireland for 147.

Ireland needed four runs from the last over, but Sugandika Kumari ran out Kelly on the penultimate ball and then removed Cara Murray.

Before captain Chamari Athapaththu was out for 27 in the seventh over, Sri Lanka got off to a good start. However, Ireland was unable to sever the 87-run partnership between Samarawickrama and Vishmi Gunaratne.

At the conclusion of the 16th over, Samarawickrama was forced to retire hurt with a score of 56, and Gunaratne was soon out.

Gaby Lewis had a strong start for Ireland. The Sri Lankan duo went on to dominate, taking three wickets each.

Ireland was 106 for 7 after 15 overs when Kelly came back with an excellent cameo, giving her team a chance to win with four runs from the last over, but they fell just short.

Prior to their opening group match against England on February 13, Ireland will play a second official pregame match against Australia on Wednesday.
