Overcoming Odds: The Story of Yugoslavian Basketball Legend Nikola Plećaš

Nikola Plećaš: From Stardom to Struggles

Nikola Plećaš, a renowned basketball player from the former Yugoslavia, recently opened up about his life experiences during a Youtube podcast. Plećaš, now 75, is a living legend in the world of basketball. He won a silver medal at the 1968 Olympic Games and clinched gold and silver in the 1970 and 1974 World Championships, respectively. Fondly known as “Saint Nikola” by the fans of Zagreb Lokomotiva where he spent a significant part of his career, Plećaš has been a regular spectator at the matches of Red Star, often seen at honorary seats next to the court.

However, the basketball legend revealed a startling reality of his life, stating he has been jobless for the past 14 years. He believes that his decision to take up a job in Borac from Banjaluka back in 1991 might have contributed to his current employment predicament. Despite regretting this choice, Plećaš shared that he never considered moving to Belgrade due to concerns about potential political and physical repercussions for his family, despite the lure of better pay.

Living in Croatia: A Serb Amidst Political Tensions

Despite being a Serb in Croatia, a nation marred by ethnic tensions and political disputes, Plećaš stated that he has never experienced any issues. This could be attributed to his popularity as a basketball player in Zagreb. According to Plećaš, his fame and the love he earned while playing for many years in Zagreb has helped him live peacefully, albeit it hasn’t aided him in securing employment.

War and Its Aftermath: A Home Lost and Rebuilt

Plećaš also delved into the heartbreaking loss his family suffered during Operation Storm, when their home was destroyed. Born in Bruvno in Lika, Plećaš painted a grim picture of the area, pointing out the many abandoned and unreconstructed houses that stand as mute witnesses of a turbulent past. However, his family didn’t wait for state aid and took matters into their own hands, rebuilding their home from scratch. Despite the devastation, Plećaš maintains a sense of humor about the situation, often jokingly referring to the incident as a liberation.
