Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali asserts that the sport will “never put a gag on anyone” in the face of ongoing free expression debate.
A new regulation that forbids “personal, religious, and political comments” without written approval is causing controversy for the governing body of the FIA.
The sport’s administration is split between the two organisations. Owning the commercial rights and managing all financial matters, including negotiating telecast and race contracts, is F1, a division of the US business Liberty Media.
A formal agreement with the European Commission requires the FIA, which oversees the legislative side, to avoid interfering in business affairs.
This week, Alex Albon of Williams stated that F1 drivers are “all concerned” about the FIA’s alleged desire to restrict their ability to express their opinions on social and political topics.
Everyone wants to talk,” said former Ferrari team boss Domenicali.
“So to have the platform to say what they want in the right way, the better it is.”
