Morocco Wins Bid to Host AFCON 2025

Morocco Announced as Host Nation for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations
Morocco has been officially declared as the host nation for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The announcement was made by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following a vote during the Executive Committee board meeting in Cairo, Egypt.
Unanimous Committee Vote
In a unanimous decision, the CAF Executive Committee selected Morocco to organize the prestigious AFCON event in 2025. Morocco’s bid faced competition from Zambia and a joint bid by Nigeria and Benin. Algeria was initially in the running but withdrew on the eve of the CAF committee meeting.
Morocco’s Sporting Infrastructure
Morocco’s successful bid underscores the nation’s impressive football infrastructure and accommodation facilities. Officials from both CAF and FIFA have lauded Morocco’s readiness to host major sporting events, including AFCON. The North African country has demonstrated its capabilities by hosting world-class CAF events, such as the African Women’s Cup of Nations in July 2022 and the Club World Cup earlier this year.
FIFA President, recognizing Morocco’s potential as an esteemed host, praised the nation as not only a hub for football but also a country adept at organizing significant events.
Ambitions Beyond AFCON
Morocco’s aspirations extend beyond AFCON hosting duties. The nation is actively bidding to jointly host the 2030 FIFA World Cup in collaboration with Portugal and Spain. This bid reflects Morocco’s commitment to fostering cooperation, interaction, and understanding between nations.
In a statement last July, King Mohammed VI highlighted the joint World Cup bid, emphasizing that it unites the two shores of the Mediterranean and aligns with the aspirations of the region’s peoples for increased collaboration. Morocco’s success in securing the AFCON hosting rights further solidifies its position as a respected destination for international sporting tournaments.
