Brighton’s Teenager Evan Ferguson scores twice, advancing the team to the FA Cup semifinals and ending Grimsby Town’s unbeaten streak
In a thrilling FA Cup quarterfinal match held at the Amex Stadium, Brighton secured their place in the semi-finals by defeating Grimsby Town. The hero of the match was 18-year-old striker Evan Ferguson, who scored two goals for the Seagulls.
The match started with a bang as Deniz Undav slid the ball past Grimsby’s goalkeeper, James McKeown, to give Brighton an early lead. Despite Grimsby’s best efforts to get back into the game, the first half ended with Brighton leading 1-0.
At the start of the second half, Ferguson showed his skills by scoring a brilliant goal with his left foot. He stretched to catch a clipped pass from Alexis Mac Allister and swung the ball into the bottom corner. Grimsby’s hopes of a comeback were dashed when Ferguson scored his second goal on the 70th minute, securing a comfortable lead for Brighton.
Grimsby, who had defeated five teams from higher divisions to reach the quarterfinals for the first time in 84 years, tried their best to get back into the game. Substitute John McAtee had two key chances, but Brighton’s goalkeeper Robert Sanchez managed to keep the ball out of the net.
Kaoru Mitoma’s deflected goal crept in at the near post in the dying moments of the match, securing Brighton’s victory and ending Grimsby’s unbeaten streak.
Despite not playing at their best, Brighton managed to keep control of the game and secure their place in the FA Cup semifinals. The Seagulls will face either Manchester United or Fulham in their first semi-final since 2019.
