As Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev prepare to face off in the Indian Wells ATP Masters 1000 final, both players are determined to stay focused on the task at hand, rather than being distracted by streaks, stats, or the possibility of becoming the world number one.
For Alcaraz, a 19-year-old Spaniard who made history last year by becoming the youngest ever world number one, winning his third Masters 1000 title would also mean unseating Novak Djokovic and reclaiming the top spot. However, he remains level-headed and is determined to focus on his performance on the court.
“”I know if I win tomorrow I’m going to become the number one,”” said Alcaraz. “”I will try not to think about that, just to think about the things that I have to do. I have to make everything perfect. That’s all I’m going to think about tomorrow.””
Meanwhile, Medvedev is on an impressive 19-match winning streak, including three titles in three weeks in Rotterdam, Doha, and Dubai. Despite the pressure that comes with such a streak, Medvedev is taking it all in stride and is determined to continue his winning ways.
“”I’m not thinking about the streak,”” said Medvedev. “”I’m just trying to win the tournament. If I win, great, I’ll be happy about it. If I lose, I’ll try to learn from it and come back stronger.””
In the semi-final, Medvedev had to overcome a late-match speed blip to defeat the 16th-ranked American, Frances Tiafoe, in eight match points. Alcaraz, on the other hand, defeated Italian Jannik Sinner 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 after taking a tough opening set.
While both players have faced each other before, with Medvedev winning at Wimbledon in 2021, they both believe that this match will be a completely different encounter.
“”If I’m not wrong, when I played against him he was number two in the world, I just started to play on the tour,”” said Alcaraz. “”Right now it’s totally different. It’s going to be, I think, a totally different match.””
With both players focused on the present and determined to give their best, the Indian Wells ATP Masters 1000 final promises to be an exciting and hard-fought match.
