American golfer Bryson DeChambeau has emerged as the clubhouse leader at the US PGA Championship, held at the challenging Oak Hill in New York. Darkness interrupted the first round of the tournament, but DeChambeau managed to card an impressive four-under 66, putting him one stroke ahead of Scottie Scheffler, Dustin Johnson, and Corey Conners.

However, some of the tournament favorites struggled in the opening round. Masters champion Jon Rahm and England's US Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick both had a tough time, finishing with disappointing six-over 76s. Meanwhile, unheralded American Eric Cole finds himself at the top of the leaderboard with a five-under score, but he has only completed 14 holes. Cole, along with 11 other groups, will resume their rounds early on Friday.

Former Masters champions Adam Scott and Dustin Johnson were among the later starters. They briefly challenged for the lead, reaching four-under, but both dropped shots on the 18th hole as darkness descended, leaving Johnson at three under and Scott at two under after a double-bogey on the last hole.

DeChambeau, known for his strength and power, dominated the course with six birdies and only two bogeys in his opening round. He famously bulked up before winning the 2020 US Open at Winged Foot, a course similar to Oak Hill.

Other notable performances include Rory McIlroy, a two-time champion of the US PGA Championship, who battled illness but managed to shoot a one-under 71. Defending champion Justin Thomas finished one stroke behind McIlroy with a score of even-par 72.

The start of the tournament was delayed by almost two hours due to overnight frost covering the course in Rochester, New York. Oak Hill proved to be a formidable challenge, with its thick rough punishing wayward shots and making it difficult to find and hold the greens. Patience and precision play a vital role on this iconic and demanding course.
