According to a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Xi Jinping’s upcoming visit to Russia is focused on promoting peace, and China will maintain an objective and impartial position on international and regional issues, including the Ukraine crisis.
“China’s proposition boils down to one sentence, which is to urge peace and promote talks,” said spokesperson Wang Wenbin in a regular press briefing on Friday.
This visit comes as Beijing attempts to position itself as a neutral peace broker in the ongoing Ukraine war while balancing its relationship with Moscow and fraying ties with the West. Western officials have expressed concerns that China may be considering providing Russia with lethal military assistance, but Beijing has denied these accusations.
As Xi Jinping prepares for his visit, it remains to be seen how China’s stance on the Ukraine crisis will affect its relationships with Russia and the West.
