India’s Sports Ministry has asked Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh to resign from his post within 24 hours in the wake of accusations of him sexually harassing women wrestlers.
The development comes after Sports Minister Anurag Thakur’s meeting with the protesting wrestlers.
Vinesh Phogat, the first Indian woman wrestler to win gold in both Commonwealth and Asian Games, is among the wrestlers who have alleged that coaches are harassing women.
She has said that some coaches, who are “favourites of the federation”, misbehave with women coaches too. “They sexually harass girls. The WFI president has sexually harassed many girls,” she has said.
