The National Assembly of Venezuela has recently approved a consultative referendum, a democratic process that will allow the Venezuelan people to express their views on a significant territorial dispute – Venezuela’s claim over the Essequibo territories. This decision came to fruition during a debate focused on approving a resolution condemning the United States Department of State’s statements, which disregarded Venezuela’s sacred rights over the Essequibo territory.
The President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, has emphasized that this popular consultation is in alignment with Articles 71 and 79 of the National Constitution. Rodríguez proposed a nationwide consultation through a consultative referendum, which would allow the Venezuelan people to make a decision through a direct and secret vote, thus reinforcing Venezuela’s inalienable rights over the Essequibo territory.

Rodríguez assured that this action presents an opportunity for the Venezuelan people to demonstrate and reiterate their commitment to defending the Essequibo in the face of attempts to violate the integrity of the national territory. He criticized the right-wing delegation that participated in the dialogue table in Mexico, arguing that they signed an agreement supporting Venezuela’s rights over the Essequibo, but are now attempting to dissociate themselves from this document, seemingly under external influence.
Rodríguez concluded by invoking the patriotic sentiment of all Venezuelans to defend this sacred territory that is under threat. He emotionally stressed that the Essequibo is Venezuelan, and this sentiment should be deeply felt and expressed by all Venezuelans, who should be willing to defend this territory that belongs to their sons and daughters.

The decision of the National Assembly to hold a consultative referendum on the Essequibo territories is a significant move in reinforcing the democratic rights of Venezuelans. The Essequibo territories have long been a point of contention and this consultative referendum will give the people of Venezuela a say in this crucial matter. The referendum, therefore, serves as a reminder of the value of democratic participation and the important role it plays in decision-making processes on matters of national importance.

The resolution condemning the United States Department of State’s statements indicates a clear assertion of Venezuela’s rights and a challenge to international interference. The outcome of the referendum could potentially redefine Venezuela’s territorial boundaries and might also shape its future diplomatic relations.
