The Roma minority in Slovakia possesses immense untapped potential, which, if harnessed through social, economic, and political inclusion, will contribute significantly to the country's strength and prosperity. Inclusive societies have proven to be more resilient and economically robust, as demonstrated by various research findings. The United States stands as a prime example, where individuals from diverse backgrounds, including immigrants and those with disabilities, have flourished due to the opportunities afforded to them. Drawing from personal experience as an immigrant from India living with a disability, I firmly believe that the same transformative power of inclusion can be harnessed for the benefit of the Roma community in Slovakia.

A Tale of Solutions and Possibilities

Slovakia has already experienced the positive impacts of inclusion through its welcoming approach to tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees fleeing the conflict with Russia. The employment of over 15,000 Ukrainian citizens has not only improved the lives of Slovakians but has also contributed significantly to the country's GDP. By fully integrating the Roma population into the educational and employment systems, Slovakia has the potential to unlock even greater possibilities. The Roma community can become an invaluable asset, driving economic growth and enhancing the overall well-being of the nation.

Tangible Steps Towards Integration

While the journey toward inclusion is undoubtedly challenging, the United States' experience shows that progress is possible. Acknowledging the hurdles faced by the Roma in Slovakia, including discrimination and poverty, it is crucial to recognize that every step forward matters. The marginalization and segregation of Roma communities are deep-rooted issues that will require generations to overcome. However, the existence of solutions and innovative initiatives provides hope for a brighter future.

Innovative Efforts in Action

During my time in Slovakia, I have had the privilege of meeting members of the Roma community, as well as local leaders, municipal authorities, NGOs, and private companies dedicated to addressing the challenges faced by the Roma population. One shining example of progress is the village of Bôrka in the Gemer Region, where civil society organizations, the local community, and the mayor collaborate closely to enhance Roma integration and quality of life. Through initiatives like Projekt DOM.ov, Roma families are empowered to build their own affordable housing, resulting in tangible improvements in living conditions. Additionally, organizations like NGO Cesta von work to equip Roma mothers with the skills needed to ensure the educational development of their children from an early age, leading to increased educational opportunities and success.

Inclusive Hiring for a Prosperous Future

In Poprad, I had the opportunity to co-host a roundtable with Jan Hero, the Plenipotentiary for Roma Communities, focusing on companies that practice inclusive hiring of Roma individuals. This dialogue left me filled with optimism about the potential of employing marginalized communities in the local workforce and the substantial benefits it can bring to Slovakia. Innovative recruitment and retention efforts not only benefit the companies economically but also contribute to the development of a skilled labor force, fostering social cohesion between Roma and non-Roma communities. Encouragingly, the companies I met in Poprad expressed a willingness to share their experiences, presenting an opportunity for Slovakia's business community to replicate and expand inclusive hiring practices on a national scale. As new employers arrive in eastern Slovakia, the current moment presents a perfect opportunity to promote and extend inclusive hiring practices.

The Way Forward

Slovakia has made significant strides in advancing Roma inclusion over the past two years, with the government apologizing for past injustices and developing strategic plans to utilize substantial European Union funds for integration efforts. It is crucial not to lose momentum at this critical juncture. Embracing greater inclusion will undeniably benefit everyone in Slovakia, fostering a stronger, more prosperous nation.
