UN Libya Envoy Hints at Alternative Plans if Electoral Laws Stagnate

UN Libya Envoy Abdoulaye Bathily has indicated that alternative plans may be considered if Libya's legislative bodies fail to agree on electoral laws in a timely manner. Bathily is pushing for elections this year to replace transitional political bodies that have outlived their mandates.

Last month, he announced an initiative to accelerate the political process, leading to the formation of a committee by the House of Representatives (HoR) and the High State Council (HSC) to examine electoral laws.

Bathily emphasized the importance of timely delivery and said that the legislative bodies would be held accountable by the Libyan people, the international community, and regional leaders if they failed to do so.

He refrained from detailing the alternatives, stating that they would be discussed when necessary.

Libyans remain skeptical of the negotiations, given the history of prolonged talks and transitional arrangements that have allowed those in power to maintain their positions.

Libya has experienced little peace since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising and subsequent split between eastern and western factions in 2014. While a ceasefire was established in 2020, a lasting political solution has yet to be achieved.
