The United States reaffirmed its support for Taiwan’s inclusion in the World Health Assembly (WHA) during a press briefing on Thursday. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller expressed disappointment that Taiwan was not invited as an observer to this year’s global health meeting.
He emphasized that inviting Taiwan would demonstrate the World Health Organization’s (WHO) commitment to inclusive health cooperation on an international scale. The U.S. pledged to persist in its efforts to secure Taiwan’s status as an observer at the WHA and ensure its active and meaningful participation in the United Nations (UN) system and other international forums.
Spokesperson Matthew Miller’s statement aligns with Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s remarks earlier in the month. Secretary Blinken emphasized that Taiwan’s inclusion as an observer at the WHA would exemplify the WHO’s dedication to an inclusive “health for all” approach in international health cooperation.
Blinken commended Taiwan as a responsible and engaged member of the global health community, highlighting its previous participation as an observer at WHA meetings. However, since President Tsai Ing-wen assumed office, Taiwan has been excluded from participation due to objections from China.
The 76th World Health Assembly commenced on May 21 and will continue until May 30. Despite Taiwan’s exclusion, a significant number of nations have publicly voiced their support for Taiwan’s participation.
Among them are Belize, Nauru, Eswatini, Marshall Islands, Guatemala, Paraguay, Haiti, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, Japan, Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, France, Canada, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Germany, and Estonia. Furthermore, 12 of Taiwan’s 13 diplomatic allies have written letters urging Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to include Taiwan in the WHA.
To promote Taiwan’s contributions to global health and garner support, a delegation led by Taiwan’s Health Minister Hsueh Jui-yuan was dispatched to Geneva, Switzerland, where the WHA is taking place. The delegation engages with representatives from other countries, emphasizing Taiwan’s capabilities and dedication to global health initiatives.
