Tunisian Interior Minister, Taoufik Charfeddine, who is known to be a close ally of President Kais Saied, announced his resignation citing personal reasons.
However, this comes at a time when the government is pressuring the opposition and facing backlash over their treatment of sub-Saharan African migrants.
Charfeddine’s resignation was followed by the appointment of Kamal Feki, the former governor of Tunisia, as the new interior minister.
Feki has already made his stance clear by refusing to allow the opposition Liberation Front coalition to protest, claiming their involvement in state security conspiracies. However, the Ministry of Interior eventually granted permission for the protest to take place.
Since the ousting of the former Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi in July 2021, President Saied has been tightening his grip over the security forces.
Charfeddine was reappointed by Saied after taking most of the powers from the former government. However, Charfeddine has been making fewer public appearances in recent months, leading to speculation about his position in the government.
Charfeddine did not provide further details about his resignation, simply thanking the president for his understanding and allowing him to step down.
This development comes amidst growing political tensions and international criticism over the Tunisian government’s treatment of opposition figures and sub-Saharan African migrants.
