The number of pupils in Czech primary schools surpasses one million for the first time

A record number of pupils are attending primary schools in the Czech Republic this school year. At the end of September, 1,007,778 schoolchildren were attending. One million children surpassed the number of children in primary schools for the first time in the history of the Czech Republic. Education Minister Vladimír Balaš said this on Twitter today. In the 2021/2022 school year, there were 964,571 schoolchildren in the Czech Republic. Ten years ago, in the 2012/2013 school year, there were 807,950 children in Czech primary schools.
“According to regular autumn data collection, there are 50,285 Ukrainian refugee children and pupils in Czech schools. The total number of children and pupils in kindergartens, primary and secondary schools and conservatories is 1,850,696. In the case of primary schools, the number of pupils exceeded one million for the first time in the history of the country,” the minister said.
According to Education Ministry officials, the record number of schoolchildren is also related to the number of Ukrainian refugees attending Czech primary schools this school year. According to the office’s data, 39 478 Ukrainian refugees were attending primary schools as of 30 September. A total of 50,859 Ukrainians were attending schools at the end of September, making up 70 percent of all foreign pupils in primary schools.
