The Announcement: A New Contender
Dr. Hugo López-Gatell, Mexico’s Undersecretary of Health, has taken a significant step towards political leadership by registering to become the coordinator of the Defense Committees of the Fourth Transformation in the country’s capital. The Race for Mexico City: A Competitive Landscape
López-Gatell joins an already bustling race for the leadership of Mexico City. His competitors include Iztapalapa Mayor Clara Brugada and former Secretary of Citizen Security Omar García Harfuch. The undersecretary’s interest in joining the race was first suggested by political analyst Hernán Gómez Bruera on September 21. By September 22, López-Gatell had confirmed these speculations in an interview where he expressed interest in participating in Morena’s internal processes. This announcement coincided with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s confirmation of López-Gatell’s departure from the Ministry of Health.
