On Saturday, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong was promoted to the top post of the ruling party, solidifying his position as the city-state’s next prime minister.
Lee Hsien Loong, secretary-general of the People’s Action Party (PAP), which has ruled the island nation since its independence in 1965, announced this year that Wong, 49, would be his successor.
Wong was named deputy secretary-general in an announcement of new leadership positions made by the party. Desmond Lee, Minister of National Development, and Chan Chun Sing, Minister of Education, have both been named assistant secretary-general.
