The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the official results of the Oyo State governorship election held recently, and Governor Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged as the winner.
Makinde, who ran for a second term, garnered a total of 563,756 votes, giving him a resounding victory over his closest rival, Teslim Folarin of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who polled 256,685 votes.
Makinde’s victory was not unexpected, as he has garnered popularity and support among the people of the state during his first term in office. His achievements in the areas of education, healthcare, infrastructure, and security have endeared him to many.
The people of the state expressed their satisfaction with his performance by giving him a massive mandate to continue his good works.
It is noteworthy that Makinde is a member of the G-5 or Integrity Group, a group within the PDP that was known to be against the presidential candidate of their party, Atiku Abubakar, during the 2019 general elections.
The group, however, supported Makinde’s candidacy and ensured that he emerged as the PDP’s flagbearer for the governorship election.
The victory of Makinde is a significant milestone for the PDP, as it shows that the party is still very much relevant in the political landscape of Nigeria.
Makinde’s victory also demonstrates the people’s confidence in his ability to deliver good governance and move the state forward.
However, despite Makinde’s victory, three members of the G-5, Governors Samuel Ortom of Benue, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu, lost their bids to go to the Senate in the February 25th election.
This outcome highlights the unpredictability of elections and the need for politicians to continually connect with their constituents and address their needs.
In conclusion, Seyi Makinde’s victory in the Oyo State governorship election is a well-deserved one. His re-election is a testament to his good works and leadership qualities, and the people of the state have shown their belief in his ability to steer the affairs of the state towards progress and development.
