Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are making strides toward restoring diplomatic ties and reopening embassies, according to officials' statements on Tuesday. This development comes over two years after several Arab states lifted their boycott of Doha.

Diplomatic Ties Activation and Embassy Reopenings

A UAE official announced in a statement that the process to activate diplomatic ties, including the reopening of embassies, is currently underway between both countries. Qatar's international media office confirmed that work is in progress to reopen their respective embassies as soon as possible. Qatari foreign ministry spokesperson Majid Al-Ansari stated that the embassy openings could happen within the coming weeks. Sources indicate that embassies are expected to reopen with new ambassadors in their posts by mid-June, and full diplomatic relations should be restored within weeks.

Broader Regional Push for Reconciliation

The restoration of ties between Qatar and the UAE is part of a larger regional push for reconciliation. Last month, Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to re-establish relations after years of hostility, which threatened Gulf stability and fueled the war in Yemen. Several Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt, have also taken steps to end Syria's decade-long isolation, following the country's crackdown on protests in 2011 that led to a prolonged civil war.

In Yemen, the Houthi movement and Saudi Arabia engaged in peace talks this week, exchanging hundreds of detainees in a significant peace-building effort. Further peace talks are anticipated in the near future.

In mid-2017, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt severed all ties with Qatar, accusing it of supporting terrorism and being too close to Iran. Doha denied these allegations. Riyadh and Cairo were the first to reappoint ambassadors to Doha in 2021 after a Saudi-led deal to resolve the dispute, and Bahrain announced last week that it would restore diplomatic ties.
