Presidential Candidate Luisa González Files Complaint Alleging Assassination Plot

Ecuadorian Presidential Candidate Alleges Plot to Harm Her
Luisa González, a presidential candidate in Ecuador associated with the Revolución Ciudadana movement, has lodged a formal complaint stating an alleged conspiracy against her. Assembled outside the main base of the Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office, she made this announcement in front of her ardent followers.
Alleged Assassination Plot Unearthed
The case originates from a man apprehended on August 30 in the northern part of Quito, who was discovered with three war grenades in his possession. He initially informed the police that the grenades were intended to target González. The Prosecutor’s Office has been questioned by the local press about the veracity of this alleged assassination attempt, but there has been no official response.
Obstacles and Delay in Investigation
Although the event took place on August 30, González opted to file the complaint now due to an apparent lack of advancement in the investigations. The current government and prison administration have been blamed by her for creating “obstacles” to the suspects’ testimony.
A Plea for Safety and Accountability
In her announcement, González emphasized that her complaint represents not just her need to protect her life and clarify this process, but also the lives of all Ecuadorians. She voiced concerns about the country’s impunity, which she believes contributes to a feeling of insecurity amidst rising violence from organized crime. She pointed out that intentional homicides in the country have surged from 5.8 to 25.32 per 100,000 occupants in 2022, the highest recorded rate.
Violence and Impunity Marking Electoral Process
González, who is vying against candidate Daniel Noboa in the forthcoming October 15 runoff, contends that this incident and the prevailing impunity in the country are indicative of the violence characterizing this electoral process. She underscored the importance of locating the individuals responsible for the alleged conspiracy against her to ensure the safety of all Ecuadorians.
