Pol Gen Torsak Sukvimol Appointed As Thailand’s New Police Chief

A New Era for Thailand’s Police Force
Thailand’s police force is set to undergo significant changes as Deputy National Police Chief Pol Gen Torsak Sukvimol steps up to the plate as the new police chief. Torsak will be replacing Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat, who is retiring this month. The selection of the new police chief was overseen by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.
Contending against Torsak for the position were Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn, Pol Gen Roy Ingkapairote, and Pol Gen Kittirat Phanphet. However, Surachate and Roy were absent from the meeting, and following a vote, Torsak emerged victorious with four out of five votes.
Leadership Transitions
Despite being the most junior among the deputies, Torsak’s rise to the top position indicates a new direction for Thailand’s police force. He is due to retire next year, as is Roy, who is anticipated to become the National Security Council’s chief. Kittirat, on the other hand, is not due to retire until 2026, and Surachate has eight more years until his retirement. However, the confirmation of these appointments is pending royal endorsement.
From Crime Suppression to National Leadership
Torsak’s career trajectory is notable for its steady rise through the ranks. He first gained recognition in the Crime Suppression Division and subsequently served as commander of the Police Royal Guards 904 Division before becoming a deputy chief of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB). After taking on the role of CIB chief, he was named an assistant police chief and then promoted to deputy chief.
Changes in National Security Leadership
The leadership transition isn’t limited to the police force. The National Security Council (NSC) is also set to see a new chief, with Pol Gen Roy Ingkapairote being touted for the position. This move is regarded as a strategic decision that will pave the way for an efficient and smooth leadership transition within the police department.
Looking Forward
The changes in leadership within Thailand’s police force and National Security Council mark a crucial period of transition. These changes have potential implications for the future directions of these entities, particularly in terms of their strategic priorities and operational focus. As they await royal approval, the nation looks forward to the new era of leadership and the potential transformations it may bring.
