Peruvian PM Anibal Torres resigns after Congress refuses a call for confidence vote

JUST IN: #BNNPeru Reports. Peruvian President Pedro Castillo has accepted his prime minister’s resignation and will reshuffle his Cabinet, he said on Thursday, amid a protracted battle between the executive and legislative branches.

Former Prime Minister Anibal Torres, a close ally of Castillo, had challenged the opposition-controlled Congress to a confidence vote last week. However, Congress declined to hold such a vote on Thursday, citing unmet conditions.

In a national television broadcast, Castillo said, “Having accepted the resignation of the prime minister, whom I thank for his work on behalf of the country, I will renew the Cabinet.”

The confidence vote challenge was intended to put pressure on Congress during a period of strained relations between the two branches of government.
