During the first EU-RNM Stabilization and Association Council meeting in Skopje, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Security and Defense Policy, Josep Borrell, confirmed that North Macedonia has committed to amending its constitution to include citizens living within the country’s borders who are part of other nationalities, such as Bulgarians.
Borrell emphasized that changing the constitution would strengthen the basic rights of citizens and preserve the Macedonian identity. He cited Croatia’s constitution, which recognizes 22 communities living in the country, as an example of a multi-ethnic society.
The EU High Representative also emphasized that North Macedonia’s identity would be fully preserved on its path towards the EU and that fulfilling the commitments already made by the country would continue to advance that process.
