In order to stop the US and South Korea from conducting joint military exercises on the Korean Peninsula, North Korea has pleaded with the UN to use its influence over those countries.

The two nations' actions, according to Pyongyang, have rendered the situation in the region "very perilous."

In a statement released on Sunday by a Korean source, Kim Son Gyong, a senior member of the DPRK's foreign ministry, urged the UN and the world community to "seriously urge the US and South Korea to immediately cease their threatening rhetoric and joint military exercises."

Seoul and Washington announced plans for more than ten days of extensive military exercises on Friday. These exercises will include both American B-1B strategic bombers and amphibious landings.

The combined drills, which will take place from March 13 to March 23, will be the largest and most extensive ever.

They were referred to as a "military demonstration against the DPRK" by a representative of the North Korean Foreign Ministry.

Kim criticized the UN's apparent inaction in the face of Washington's and Seoul's "irresponsible" actions in the area.

Also, the North Korean official implied that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres might apply different rules to military operations in the area.

The diplomat claimed that despite Guterres' decision to "be mute" in the face of "the US and South Korea's awful military provocation," he was quick to condemn Pyongyang.

In his view, the UN must adopt a new strategy if it wants to "promote the sustainable detente on the Korean Peninsula and in the region." He continued by stating that the US-South Korean war simulations were going to enter a "very critical and unmanageable phase" if left unchecked.

US Forces Korea spokesperson Colonel Isaac Taylor revealed preparations for two concurrent joint drills, dubbed Freedom Shield and Warrior Shield, to reporters on Friday in Seoul.

The military official stated that the war exercises would combine "learning learned from recent wars and conflicts" in order to strengthen the US and South Korea's ability to respond to North Korean "aggression."
