The state media reported on Monday that, North Korea is in plans to conduct a plenary meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) in late February. The issues related to agricultural development are expected to be discussed during this meeting.
According to the state media, North Korea has decided to convene the seventh enlarged plenary meeting of the party late this month. This decision was taken at the politburo meeting of the WPK’s Central Committee held the previous day.
The state media reported that, this move is aimed at reviewing last year’s achievements in N.Korea’s rural revolution and to discussing the “immediate farming issue and long-term goals for the agricultural development”.
It added that, “It is very important and urgent task to establish the correct strategy for the development of agriculture and take relevant measures for the immediate farming”.
If it is held as per the fixed schedule, this upcoming party session would take place just two months after N.Korea convened the longest-ever, six-day WPK plenary meeting in late December of 2022. Usually, Pyongyang conducts party plenary meetings once or twice every year.
Observers opine that, N.Korea’s rare move to conduct another plenary meeting in such short gap points out the urgent need to cope with chronic food shortages and to improve people’s livelihoods.
