MEP Highlights Contradictory Approach of Taliban to International Community
In a recent interview with the source, Hannah Newman, a member of the European Parliament, spoke about her meeting with some Taliban officials last year. She noticed the group’s contradictory approach to the international community, emphasizing independence on one hand and complaining about the reduction in international aid to Afghanistan’s budget on the other.
Contradictions in Taliban’s Approach
Neumann pointed out the contradictions in the Taliban’s point of view, stating that the group opposes brain drain and supports girls’ education, yet there is no prospect of providing job opportunities and livelihoods for women and minorities in Afghanistan.
Taliban’s Management of Power
The Member of European Parliament criticized the Taliban’s management of power, describing it as irresponsible and rarely following through on actions pledged after coming to power.
Restrictive Policies Against Afghan Women
Neumann also criticized the Taliban’s restrictive policies against Afghan women, calling it an example of “gender apartheid.”
EU’s Stance on the Issue
Newman emphasized that the European Parliament has continuously put the issue of Afghanistan on its agenda and is engaged in discussions with colleagues from other EU institutions to develop a comprehensive approach.
Humanitarian Aid to Afghanistan
While the MEP supports sending humanitarian aid from the international community to Afghanistan, she emphasizes that these aids should be aligned with international principles and for the people of Afghanistan, not the Taliban. Neumann also stressed the importance of opposing the Taliban’s ban on women working in UN offices and continuing to provide humanitarian assistance.
Heartbreaking Condition in Afghanistan
Neumann had traveled to Kabul last month and wrote about his experience in an Instagram post. She expressed her sadness over the condition of children who “can’t even smile due to malnutrition.” The MEP also pointed out the dire state of girls’ fatal depression, calling it an unbearable sadness.
