Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats Nominations

Political maneuvers are in full swing in Lithuania as the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD) party gears up for the 2024 presidential and European elections. On September 24th, 70 branches of the TS-LKD completed the nomination process for these elections. High-profile names such as Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, the Minister of Social Security and Labour Monika Navickienė, and the current party leader Gabrielius Landsbergis were proposed as presidential candidates.

Landsbergis’s Uncertain Candidacy

Despite being nominated by a majority of party branches, Gabrielius Landsbergis, the current Foreign Affairs Minister and leader of TS-LKD, is yet to make a decision on his candidacy. He stated his intentions to ponder his decision, noting that the party secretariat has not yet asked him to confirm his participation in the elections.

The TS-LKD has adopted a democratic approach to candidate selection for the presidential elections. The party plans to hold primaries in November to select their official candidate for the upcoming elections. This strategy adds another layer of democratic legitimacy to the candidate and ensures that their candidacy is backed by party members.
