Kosovo PM Requests Western Powers Not Exert Pressure To Accept Contentious Association of 5 Serb-Majority Municipalities

Kosovar Prime Minister Albin Kurti urged Western nations not to put pressure on his small Balkan country to accept a contentious partnership of five municipalities with a Serb majority that is escalating tensions between Kosovo & Serbia.

According to Kurti, the emphasis should instead be on democratizing Serbia and eradicating what he called Belgrade's hegemonistic ideologies.

Kurti stated in an interview on Sunday that in order to "face the past," the Serbian government must recognize the independence of each and every former Yugoslav republic.

He emphasized the need for Belgrade to have a stronger inclination toward NATO and the European Union (EU) rather than Russia.

According to the prime minister, if they let go of the notion that Kosovo is still Serbia's, "they will be much more democratic, European."

Kosovo and Serbia have been in communication since 2011, but only a small portion of the 33 signed agreements have been carried out.

Kurti characterized the current state of the negotiations as "a problem-solving ideology... every solution became ever more complicated, ever less implementable, and the public lost interest."

"A good framework and platform for moving forward," he said of the new proposal, "which makes us hopeful about the prospects of future talks and an agreement.”
