Civil society organization Green Peace warned that South Africa's water supply would fall 17% short of demand by 2030, making the country's water scarcity its most significant challenge. The rainbow nation ranks as the world's 32nd driest nation, meaning that water conservation is a shared responsibility.

The warning came on the heels of the UN 2023 water conference, the first event of its kind in nearly 50 years. The UN has dedicated this year's World Water Day to accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crisis. In its latest report on water, the UN revealed that 2.3 billion people live in water-stressed countries, with 733 million living in high and critically water-stressed countries.
