Republican Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Steve Scalise, has commented on the tragic shooting in Nashville on Monday, which resulted in the deaths of six people, including three children.

Scalise expressed his condolences for the victims and their families, and suggested that rather than focusing on gun control, efforts should be directed towards improving school safety measures to prevent future shootings.

Scalise criticized Democrats for politicizing the tragedy and calling for gun control before all the facts were known. He argued that reducing the number of guns in America is not the solution and urged Americans to wait for the results of the investigation before taking any action.

“Yeah, the first thing in any kind of tragedy I do is, I pray … Let’s get the facts,” said Rep. Scalise.

However, Scalise's comments have drawn criticism given his voting record against mental health options, despite suggesting that mental health is a driving factor behind many shootings.

Scalise was himself a victim of gun violence in 2017, but he and House Republicans have used the attack to target Democrats and their policies.

Scalise's comments come after U.S. Representative Tim Burchett (R-TN) called for prayer instead of action to address gun violence, stating that "We're not gonna fix it."

The shooting at the Covenant Presbyterian Elementary School has raised concerns about school safety measures and the need for mental health support in the community.
