The campaign team of SLPP Mayoral Candidate, Mohamed Gento Kamara, has accused the organizers of the Freetown Mayoral Debate of not following due process and setting up a “pre-cooked sham” aimed at trapping their candidate. However, the organizers, Sierraeye, have responded to these allegations in a letter dated April 4, 2023.
SLPP Accuses Organizers of Failing to Follow Due Process
Sierraeye’s letter, addressed to the Secretary General of the SLPP, requested the participation of their Mayoral Candidate in the debate. The letter was duly received and acknowledged by Abass Sheku Kamara, who signed as SLPP SG PA, on the same date. Sierraeye emphasized that they have been engaging with political parties and addressing their concerns about the debate, with the debate moderator, Umaru Fofana, intervening in these conversations on multiple occasions.
Sierraeye denied the ambushing allegation made by Gento’s campaign team and asserted that they have maintained open communication with the SLPP representatives. While Gento is currently unwilling to participate in any debate, Sierraeye emphasized that the electorates in the Sierra Leonean capital deserve to hear from all Mayoral Candidates. The organizers affirmed their commitment to proceed with the debate, with or without the participation of the SLPP Candidate, but expressed their willingness to accept him if he changes his mind.
