Kayode Fayemi, the former governor of Ekiti State, is currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) regarding the alleged misappropriation of N4 billion. Reports indicate that Fayemi arrived at the EFCC office in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, at approximately 9:40 am on Thursday, where he is being grilled by the anti-graft agency.

Sources reveal that the interrogation is part of the EFCC's ongoing investigations into the financial activities of several former governors. While it remains uncertain whether Fayemi will be released or detained following the questioning, the EFCC is intensifying efforts to gather evidence and uncover the truth.

Controversy Surrounding Summons and Attempt to Postpone Appearance

In the lead-up to his appearance before the EFCC, Fayemi attempted to postpone his visit to the anti-graft agency's office. He made a plea to the commission, requesting permission to present a book in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari on May 19 before responding to the invitation.

A letter dated May 12 from the EFCC had summoned Fayemi to appear before the zonal command office in Kwara State on May 18 to address questions related to money laundering activities. However, in a subsequent letter dated May 15, Fayemi's lawyer explained that the former governor was engaged in organizing and reviewing books dedicated to President Buhari, scheduled for a public presentation and launching on May 19 in Abuja.

Fayemi's lawyer expressed regret that the former governor would be unable to honor the EFCC's invitation on May 18 due to his prior commitments. The letter detailed the events surrounding the book launch and Fayemi's involvement as one of the organizers and reviewers.

Amidst the ongoing investigations, local sources have reported that Fayemi had been lobbying for a cabinet appointment in President Tinubu's administration. However, despite appeals and pressure from some state governors, including Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and Mohammed Badaru of Jigawa State, the move was reportedly rejected by Tinubu.
