Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, in a meeting with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani, highlighted the crucial importance of promoting wisdom among all Sudanese parties. President al-Sisi emphasized the need to immediately and consistently establish a ceasefire to safeguard the capabilities of the Sudanese state. Preserving Sudanese national institutions and preventing their collapse, as well as intensifying efforts to deliver humanitarian and relief assistance to alleviate the suffering of those affected, was also emphasized.

Imposition of Sanctions and Withdrawal from Negotiations

In response to the recent withdrawal of the Sudanese army from negotiations mediated by Saudi Arabia and the United States in Jeddah, the White House announced the imposition of new economic sanctions and visa restrictions on parties involved in violence in Sudan. The Sudanese army accused the Rapid Support Forces of bombing the Old Market area in the capital, while the Rapid Support Forces accused the army of conducting aerial bombings. The situation has further complicated the ongoing mediation efforts.

Search for Solutions Amidst Crisis

Parallel to the Saudi-American mediation and the Jeddah talks, other entities are actively working to find a solution to the crisis in Sudan. The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), consisting of eight countries including Kenya, has been involved in seeking a resolution. Recently, Yusuf Ezzat, advisor to the commander of the Rapid Support Forces, visited Kenya, which sparked dissatisfaction among army commanders. This indicates that multiple actors are engaged in finding a path forward amidst the ongoing tensions.

Extension of UN Political Mission and Accusations

The UN Security Council has extended the mandate of the UN political mission in Sudan for an additional six months. However, Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan accused UN envoy Volker Peretz of contributing to the escalation of the conflict, further straining the relationship between Sudan and the international community. The situation calls for concerted efforts to rebuild trust and foster constructive dialogue for the resolution of the crisis.
