A delegation representing the government headed by Nicolas Maduro, President of Venezuela, reached Mexico City on Friday, in order to sign a “social agreement” with its political opponents. These talks between the two sides were stopped for over a year.
These negotiations, which are mediated by Norway, resume after months of informal meetings. This meeting would lead to the easing of U.S. oil sanctions on Venezuela by boosting Chevron’s activity in the energy sector in Venezuela.
Congressional leader Jorge Rodriguez leads the government’s delegation, while the opposition group is headed by politician Gerardo Blyde. These talks would break an impasse between Maduro’s regime and the divided political opposition.
According to the government, both sides would sign an agreement on Saturday, which aims to address important social needs.
