DA Nominates uMngeni Mayor Chris Pappas As Premier Candidate for 2024 KwaZulu-Natal Elections

DA’s Rising Star, Chris Pappas
The Democratic Alliance (DA), one of South Africa’s leading political parties, has chosen uMngeni Mayor Chris Pappas as their candidate for the position of premier in the 2024 elections for KwaZulu-Natal. This move comes as part of the DA’s ongoing effort to challenge the incumbent African National Congress (ANC) in the province, with the party’s leader, John Steenhuisen, praising Pappas for his exceptional leadership skills.
Pappas, who has been instrumental in making significant improvements in the uMngeni municipality, has confirmed that he will continue to serve as mayor unless he is elected to the provincial government. His understanding of the province’s culture and needs, as well as his fluency in isiZulu, Afrikaans, and English, make him a strong contender in the upcoming elections.
Challenging ANC’s Reign
Steenhuisen, while announcing Pappas’ candidacy, didn’t shy away from criticizing the ANC’s blemished track record in the province, pointing out the party’s failures which include widespread corruption, high unemployment rates, and persistent poverty. He has urged those dissatisfied with the ANC’s performance to vote for a change and has proposed DA as the preferable alternative.
Expressing his disappointment with the ANC government, Pappas highlighted several issues, including the delayed social grant payments and the lack of sufficient school meals for students. He also drew attention to the province’s concerning crime situation, where he feels criminals are overpowering the police.
Contentious Relationships and High Hopes
Pappas’ vocal criticisms of the ANC have previously stirred up controversies, leading to a tense relationship with the provincial ANC chairperson, Siboniso Duma. Despite this, Pappas remains optimistic about the DA’s chances in KwaZulu-Natal and believes that the prospects of winning the province are high.
Campaigning for Hope and Trust
During his campaign, Pappas plans to crisscross KwaZulu-Natal to build trust and promote a vision of hope. He has also reassured uMngeni residents that he will continue to dedicate his efforts to improving the municipality while campaigning. He acknowledges that turning around a government marred by 28 years of mismanagement and corruption is a daunting task, but he is confident about the visible improvements made during the DA’s 22-month tenure in the government.
Pushing for a Change in Governance
The 2024 elections present a crucial opportunity for the DA to bring about a much-needed change in governance in KwaZulu-Natal, with Pappas leading the charge. Given his track record as the mayor of uMngeni and his understanding of provincial affairs, Pappas’ candidacy could potentially usher in a new era of governance in the province, challenging the long-standing dominance of the ANC.
