NBA Expresses Concerns Over Supreme Court Fire Incident
The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, has extended condolences to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, and Supreme Court personnel following a recent fire incident at the Supreme Court complex. The NBA calls for an investigation into the incident to ensure the safety and integrity of Nigeria’s court infrastructure.
NBA Urges Appointment of Additional Supreme Court Justices
In a statement signed by the NBA’s Spokesperson, Akorede Lawal, Maikyau called for the immediate appointment of additional Justices to meet the constitutional requirement of 21 Justices for the Supreme Court. He voiced concerns over the workload and remuneration of existing Justices, highlighting the need for a constitutional amendment to address these issues and limit the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction to specific constitutional matters.
NBA Advocates for Improved Judicial Remuneration
The NBA President provided an update on the association’s engagement with the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) and the National Judicial Council (NJC) regarding judicial officers’ remuneration. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed efforts to harmonize recommendations for inclusion in the 2024 budget. The NBA proposed new allowances and the delinking of judicial remuneration from the civil service to enhance judicial independence.
In a valedictory court session honoring retired Justice Amina Adamu Augie, the NBA President commended her exemplary career spanning 35 years. He highlighted her contributions to gender equality and women’s empowerment within the judiciary, recognizing her as a trailblazer who challenged traditional norms in places of authority. Justice Augie’s retirement marks the end of a distinguished judicial journey from the magistracy to the Supreme Court bench.
