President Defends Decision to Pass on Indigenous Staff to Claudia Sheinbaum

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador recently defended his decision to pass on the indigenous staff of office to Claudia Sheinbaum, the former head of government of Mexico City, despite protests from indigenous communities. The president stated that he had received authorization from the indigenous community that gave him the staff to pass it on.

A Symbol of Commitment to Indigenous Communities

López Obrador emphasized the importance of the staff of office as a symbol of commitment to indigenous communities. He stressed the staff was handed over to the person “who will lead the movement”, indicating his decision to step back from the transformation process. He also proposed that if indigenous communities decide, they could conduct a ceremony and give the staff of office to the elected president.

Indigenous Communities Express Discontent

However, this decision has been met with disapproval from the National Council of Indigenous Peoples and Communities. On September 4, the council reiterated that the staff of office is a symbol given by indigenous peoples and should not be subject to “political or economic decisions”. They rejected the handover to the coordinator of a political party, arguing that it is “contrary to the spiritual value of an emblem that should not be stolen or appropriated.” Various leaders from some communities have echoed this sentiment, calling for the return of the staff during a recent press conference.

Disputes with The National Electoral Institute

In addition to the ongoing controversy, the president also revealed that the National Electoral Institute (INE) had asked him to remove a photo from his social media platforms in which he handed the staff to Sheinbaum. While questioning the Institute’s involvement, López Obrador stated that he would respect the electoral authority’s resolution and defended the photo.

A Complex Issue with Multiple Perspectives

The issue of the indigenous staff of office has sparked debate among the public, indigenous communities, and political bodies. While López Obrador defends his decision as a symbol of commitment to indigenous communities and the transformation process, some indigenous communities see it as a misuse of a deeply significant cultural symbol. The involvement of the INE adds another layer of complexity to the situation. It remains to be seen how this issue will be resolved, and what impact it will have on the relationship between the government and indigenous communities.
