Cocktail Attack on BNP Leader Mirza Abbas’s Residence

In an alarming incident, the residence of BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas was targeted with two cocktails on Tuesday morning. The episode occurred post the conclusion of a 48-hour nationwide hartal organized by the BNP. The attack, as reported by family members, took place at Abbas’s home in Shahjahanpur, Dhaka.
The Attack
According to Sabbir, a worker at the house, two individuals on a motorcycle hurled Molotov cocktails into the courtyard around 7:30 am. One cocktail exploded causing a loud noise, while the other remained unexploded, engulfing the house in a haze of smoke. The attackers managed to escape upon the arrival of security personnel.
BNP’s Reaction
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi expressed his condemnation at the incident. He accused the government and the ruling party of systematically engaging in destructive acts to instill fear, suppress the people’s movement for voting rights, and conduct one-sided elections. The BNP has announced another 48-hour nationwide blockade starting Wednesday.
Police Investigation
Following the incident, Deputy Commissioner of Motijheel Division, Hayatul Islam Khan, confirmed that the police received reports about the cocktail explosions at Abbas’s residence. A team of officers was immediately dispatched to investigate. The security personnel at Abbas’s house reported that they had seen individuals in police uniform on motorcycles near the scene. Mirza Abbas was arrested on October 31 following a clash between BNP activists and the police during a rally where a police officer was killed. He is currently in jail, while his family members, including his wife Afroza Abbas, leader of the Nationalist Women’s Party, continue to reside at the attacked house.
