China Constructs Border Defence Villages near India's Uttarakhand

China's construction of border defense villages adjacent to Uttarakhand, along with its involvement in building houses near the Line of Actual Control (LAC), has raised concerns. Sources have revealed that China is developing these border villages, comprising 250 homes, approximately 11 kilometers away from the LAC. Additionally, around 55-56 houses have been constructed around 35 kilometers from the LAC, under the supervision of the People's Liberation Army (PLA). China plans to build 400 villages in the eastern sector alone, as Uttarakhand shares a 350 km border with China. The lack of livelihood opportunities in most border villages leads to outward migration.

India Monitors Border Situation amid Construction Activities

The Indian Army has been closely monitoring the situation along the LAC, which serves as the border between India and China. The construction of border defense villages and houses by China in close proximity to the LAC raises concerns about their strategic implications. These developments add to the existing border standoff between the two countries and call for increased vigilance and diplomacy to address the ongoing tensions.

India Plans Tunnel to Enhance Border Connectivity

In a bid to improve connectivity and ease travel to the last border post of the Lipulekh pass on the India-China border, India has announced the construction of a six-kilometer-long tunnel between Bundi and Garbiyang on the Ghatiabagar-Lipulekh road in Uttarakhand. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has awarded the survey work contract to ATINOK India Consultants, with the final proposal expected to be submitted within a year. The estimated project cost is Rs 2,000 crore, and work is anticipated to commence in four to five years.

Enhancing Infrastructure for Border Security

The construction of the tunnel aims to facilitate smoother and more efficient movement along the border, enhancing accessibility for troops and civilians in the region. As part of the project, the BRO has already converted the border road from Bundi to Garbiyang into a single lane, with plans for the remaining stretch to be double-laned. The ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and connectivity in the border areas underline India's commitment to bolstering its security apparatus and ensuring the safety of its borders.
