Challenging the Console: Mortal Kombat 1 on Nintendo Switch Faces Heavy Criticism

Switch Version of Mortal Kombat 1 Falls Short
The much-anticipated release of WB and NetherRealm Studios’ latest Mortal Kombat game, Mortal Kombat 1, has stirred up a storm of criticism, particularly targeting the Nintendo Switch version of the game. Complaints are flooding online platforms from players disappointed by the game’s visual bugs and poor performance on the Switch console. This has sparked discussions about the capabilities of the Switch and the need for parity in game quality across different platforms.
The Technological Gap
The Nintendo Switch, now over six years old, has always been technologically weaker compared to its competitors, Xbox and Playstation. It is therefore unsurprising that multi-platform games often look less visually appealing on the Switch. However, players argue that the quality of Mortal Kombat 1 on the Switch is exceptionally poor, even considering the console’s technological limitations.
The game suffers from long loading times, visual inconsistencies, and low-resolution textures. Screenshots and videos of the Switch version of Mortal Kombat 1 depict a significant downgrade in visual quality compared to versions on more powerful consoles. Even character models, while slightly better, exhibit quirks such as bulging eyes, plastic-like hair, and jagged edges on clothing.
Performance Issues and Pricing Concerns
Beyond the visual aspect, the game also struggles with performance issues. Although it targets a smooth 60 frames per second during fights, it rarely achieves this goal, often falling into the high 40s and mid 50s, resulting in a choppy presentation. Loading times are another significant problem, with matches taking up to a minute to start.
Despite these shortcomings, the game is still priced at a full $70, the same as its counterparts on more powerful consoles. This pricing decision has drawn criticism from players, with some labeling it as controversial and unreasonable.
Time for a Reevaluation?
These criticisms raise questions about the decision to port demanding games to technologically inferior consoles. It begs the question of whether it’s time to acknowledge that certain consoles, like the Switch, might not be equipped to handle some of the bigger games. If such games are to be ported to these consoles, a lower price tag for these inferior versions could be more reasonable.
Community Response and the Way Forward
The community response to Mortal Kombat 1 on the Switch has been largely negative, with many players expressing disappointment over the game’s graphics and performance. However, some players appreciate the fact that this is a native port and not a streaming cloud version, which has limited longevity and relies on streaming servers.
There is anticipation for a more powerful version of the Nintendo Switch, which could potentially handle next-gen games better. Until then, Switch users will have to contend with these graphical downgrades, and developers will need to reconsider their strategies for porting games to different consoles.
