In his State of the Union speech at the US Capitol, US President Joe Biden tells Americans that US democracy 'bruised' but 'unbroken'.

Before a joint session of Congress, Biden said, ‘Two years ago, democracy faced its greatest threat to the civil war, And today, though bruised, our democracy remains unbowed and unbroken.’

It is his second State of the Union speech and the first in front of a divided Congress. Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy called the House to order and stood next to Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, who led a procession of senators into the chamber.

Biden started his speech by touting the economy and low unemployment rate, as well as the United States recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

The president did not specifically mention the Chinese spy balloon that the US shot down over the weekend but instead addressed China generally.

Biden proposed a "unity" agenda to work with Republicans, encouraging bipartisan support on issues such as increasing access to mental health care, ending smoking, assisting veterans, and reducing illegal drug use.

The other part of his speech contrasted his agenda with the GOP's by calling for the wealthy to pay their fair share of taxes and pushing for Medicare and Social Security to be guaranteed.
