Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has accused Rahul Gandhi, a senior leader of the Indian National Congress party, of influencing Rajasthan’s Chief Minister, Ashok Gehlot, to criticize the Delhi police’s handling of sexual assault cases. The statement came after Gehlot urged Rahul Gandhi to speak up about the issue and reveal the names of the victims to ensure justice is served.
Speaking to reporters, Biswa Sarma alleged that Gehlot’s comments were made at Rahul Gandhi’s behest, stating that, “”Congress leader Rahul Gandhi must have asked Ashok Gehlot to condemn the Delhi police’s actions, which is why he is doing so.””
Biswa Sarma also criticized Rahul Gandhi’s previous claim of encountering militants and urged him to inform the police. “”If Rahul Gandhi won’t reveal the names of the victims, how will they receive justice? Since he claimed to have encountered militants, the police must be informed,”” he said.
The Delhi police have been under scrutiny following multiple reports of sexual assaults on women in the city. Many citizens and political leaders have criticized the police for not taking sufficient action in these cases.
The accusations made by Biswa Sarma are likely to further intensify the political tensions surrounding the issue.
