Alan Kyerematen’s Independent Candidacy: A Political Game Changer or Mere Rebellion?

Alan Kyerematen, the ex-Trades Minister, has publicly announced his departure from Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) and his intention to contest the country’s presidency as an independent candidate. Despite his split from the NPP, Kyerematen has assured the party of his enduring respect for its principles and values. He argues that his decision will not harm the party and instead believes it will present an opportunity for the NPP to be a part of a prospective future Government of National Unity.

Davis Opoku Ansah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mpraeso, has revealed that over 20 New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs who previously supported Alan Kyerematen will not join him in his new political venture. These MPs have chosen to stay loyal to the party, pledging to work tirelessly to guarantee its victory in the next elections. Mr. Ansah, himself a former backer of Mr. Kyerematen, expressed disappointment over the latter’s exit from the NPP. He reiterated his commitment to the NPP and its vision for Ghana, despite the internal differences and factions that may exist within the party.

Alan Kyerematen’s Vision for Ghana’s Future

As part of his new political journey, Kyerematen has appealed to the party’s supporters to vote for their favored NPP Parliamentary Candidate and him as the presidential candidate in the forthcoming December 2024 elections. He aims to become the sixth President of the fourth Republic of Ghana. He expressed his gratitude for those who have supported his vision and manifested faith in the promise of a brighter future for Ghana.

Despite his significant contributions to the unity of the NPP, Kyerematen narrates several instances of hostility and attacks against his supporters leading to his decision to resign. He feels that his representations and appeals for attention to these issues were ignored, leading him to take the drastic step of leaving the party. His decision to run for the presidency as an independent candidate is seen as a protest against the alienation of his supporters.

Alan Kyerematen’s Assurance to NPP

Despite his separation from the NPP, Alan Kyerematen maintains his respect for the party and aims to contribute to its objectives as an independent candidate. He calls upon the party to support him in the upcoming 2024 elections and assures them that his decision will not harm the party’s future prospects. Instead, he sees it as an opportunity for participation in a future Government of National Unity.

With this decision, Kyerematen joins the league of politicians who have chosen to contest for the presidency outside the traditional political party framework. His actions could potentially reshape the political landscape of Ghana ahead of the 2024 elections. However, only time will tell how this move will impact the NPP and Ghana’s political future.
