A Mother’s Tale: How a Routine Eye Test Unveiled a Brain Tumor in Her 14-year-old Daughter
In a tale of unexpected medical intervention, Naomi Holman, a mother from Herefordshire, shares how a routine eye test led to the detection of a brain tumour in her 14-year-old daughter, Molly. Noticing symptoms such as lethargy, clumsiness, and headaches over several weeks, Naomi initially attributed these to hormonal changes, the hot weather, and excess screen time. It was during a GP visit for another issue that a doctor noticed inflammation in Molly’s eye, which led to an optometrist at Vision Express detecting a brain tumour behind her optic nerve.
Diagnosis and Treatment: The Swift Response to a Critical Condition
Following an MRI scan and a comprehensive eye examination in the Accident and Emergency department, Molly was diagnosed with a Grade 2 Meningioma, a common type of brain tumour originating in the tissue layers covering the brain and spinal chord. She was immediately transferred to Birmingham Children’s Hospital for surgery. In a whirlwind of events, Molly underwent two surgeries within just 48 hours to remove the tumour.
The Aftermath: Life with Visual Impairment
Regrettably, the tumour, which was nearly a quarter the size of Molly’s brain, had caused significant damage to her optic nerve. This resulted in severe visual impairment, rendering Molly with almost no vision in her left eye and a mere 20% vision in her right. Molly now relies on qualified support not only for her academic curriculum but also for acquiring essential life skills. She remains under regular consultation with her hospital team and Vision Express, who are working relentlessly to prescribe new glasses in a bid to improve her remaining sight.
In Retrospect: A Mother’s Plea for Regular Eye Checks
Reflecting on this harrowing experience, Mrs. Holman urges others to ensure they have regular eye checks. She highlights that the situation could have been catastrophic if the tumour had been spotted at a later stage. The symptoms associated with Meningioma, such as headaches, seizures, speech and visual problems, and difficulties balancing, are often dismissed or misinterpreted, leading to delayed diagnosis. Mrs. Holman’s message underscores the critical importance of regular eye checks in potentially saving lives.
