European Union defense ministers are expected to approve the allocation of €2 billion from the European Peace Fund for the supply of shells to Ukraine. This decision comes amid the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
The head of the EU Foreign Policy Service, Josep Borrel, noted that the ministers will make their decision at a meeting in Brussels in order to replenish their stocks in Europe. The allocation proposal is currently in the process of obtaining preliminary approval from the ambassadors of the 27 EU countries in Brussels.
According to sources, The defense ministers are likely to follow a three-stage plan to ensure the security of Europe while keeping in mind the situation in Ukraine.
The ministers will explore the possibility “to use €1 billion for the supply of both Soviet and Western-style ammunition for Ukraine from existing stocks; to allocate another €1 billion to ensure urgent purchases of new ammunition that will go to Kiev and to replenish stocks in Europe; and to begin expanding production,” said sources.
