Togolese authorities have embarked on an ambitious plan to introduce an urban transport system in Lomé, the capital city, that adapts to changing demographics.
The Ministry of Road, Air, and Rail Transport recently organized a ceremony to mark the beginning of the development of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP).

Co-funded by the European Union and CoMSSA: A Transformative Initiative

The Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) for Lomé is a collaborative effort between the European Union Commission and the Covenant of Mayors for Sub-Saharan Africa (CoMSSA).
Both entities have invested €600,000 into the project, demonstrating their commitment to sustainable transportation solutions.

The SUMP aims to transform the existing transport system, which is predominantly centered around motorcycles and private cars, into a more balanced and multimodal system.
Michel Komlan Tindano, the representative of the Minister of Transport, emphasized the importance of this approach in guiding the evolution of Lomé's transportation infrastructure.

Addressing Key Challenges: Congestion, Pollution, Safety, and Access to Services

The development of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) in Lomé is driven by the need to tackle several pressing challenges.
The plan seeks to alleviate road congestion, reduce air pollution, improve road safety, and enhance access to basic social services and facilities for residents living in the peripheral neighborhoods of Greater Lomé.

By implementing comprehensive and sustainable transportation strategies, the SUMP aims to create a more livable and connected city.
The Ministry of Transport anticipates that the finalized SUMP for Lomé will be available within 14 months.
During this period, a detailed study will be conducted to restructure the Lomé Transport Company (SOTRAL), further optimizing the public transportation system.

This urban mobility plan is a crucial component of the larger strategic project titled "Development Plan for the 10 main municipalities" and aligns with the Togo 2025 Government Roadmap.
Once successfully implemented in Lomé, the project will serve as a model for replication in other cities across Togo, fostering sustainable urban development and improving the quality of life for citizens.
