Ta Prohm Temple’s East Gate Restoration Project Approaches 70% Completion
The restoration project of the east gate of Ta Prohm Temple, located in Siem Reap province, is making significant progress, with approximately 70% of the renovation work completed as of May 24. The APSARA National Authority, in collaboration with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), is overseeing the restoration efforts, aimed at preserving the historical and cultural significance of the temple.
Detailed Restoration Plan and Progress Update
The head of the restoration team from ASI, PVNCM ESWAR, shared that the year-long renovation project, which commenced in early January 2022, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2023. Currently, experts are focusing on the roof restoration of both sides of the gate, a crucial step that is nearing completion. Once finished, the team will proceed with the installation of the central roof, marking the final phase of the restoration process.
Mr. PVNCM ESWAR also emphasized the importance of understanding the strength and stability of the restored east gate. While new stones have been installed, continuous monitoring is necessary to address any potential issues that may arise during the restoration process. This approach ensures that the structural integrity of the gate is maintained.

Restoration Focus and Challenges of the East Gate
The restoration efforts for Ta Prohm’s East Gate primarily concentrate on the intricate carvings, replacing lost and damaged stones, and addressing roof stone trimming and sealing to prevent seepage. However, the APSARA National Authority highlights that one of the main challenges faced during the restoration is the structural impact caused by the movement of large tree roots. These roots have displaced the original foundation, resulting in the tearing apart of the stone wall and posing a risk of potential collapse.
To address this challenge, the restoration team is employing meticulous techniques to reinforce the gate’s structure and ensure its long-term stability. By carefully restoring and preserving the gate, the project aims to safeguard the cultural heritage of Ta Prohm Temple for future generations to appreciate and admire.
