India: Devastating Fire Erupts at Chemical Plant in Punjab’s Mohali

Fire Breaks Out at Mohali Chemical Plant
On Wednesday afternoon, a severe fire broke out at a chemical factory in the Kurali area of Mohali, Punjab. The incident reportedly resulted in several explosions heard from inside the factory. As the fire continues to rage, thick black smoke is seen enveloping the sky above the plant, causing a major cause for concern among local residents and authorities.
Casualties and Injuries
The devastating fire has caused significant harm, with at least five workers being injured, and fears of more burn victims. Two of the injured have been admitted to the Mohali Civil hospital and three to a nearby hospital. The condition of four workers is reported to be serious. The number of workers present inside the factory at the time of the incident is believed to be close to a dozen.
Local Response and Aftermath
Immediate response to the incident has seen over 20 fire tenders from Mohali and Ropar districts dispatched to the scene. Efforts to control the fire began at around 11:00 am and are ongoing. In addition to the fire brigades, a team of doctors and several ambulances have also reached the spot. The fire brigade is combating the blaze with special chemicals being brought from Mohali to extinguish the fire.
The administration is taking precautionary measures such as evacuating workers from adjoining factories due to fears that the blaze could spread. Local residents have reported a stinging sensation in their eyes due to the thick cloud of smoke enveloping the small town of Kurali, which is located about 40 km away from Chandigarh.
Investigation and Future Implications
The exact reason for the fire at the chemical factory is yet to be determined. Eyewitnesses have reported hearing explosions from the factory before the fire engulfed the compound. The police are investigating the cause of the fire.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety measures in place at the factory and the potential implications for the surrounding area. Kurali is one of the biggest markets for firecrackers in the region, making the situation even more precarious. This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety regulations and emergency preparedness in industrial areas.
As the situation unfolds, further updates are expected, including potential casualty numbers, the progress of firefighting efforts, and the outcome of the investigation into the cause of the fire.
