Doctors Hospital Health System Limited (DHHS) has made public its plans to revolutionize healthcare services on the island of Grand Bahama. The establishment of a new hospital, scheduled for completion by fall 2024, is expected to significantly enhance access to medical care for island residents. The hospital will not only provide specialized services but will also support local physicians and other healthcare providers, including the Rand Memorial Hospital.

Introducing the Rockwell Hospital

The new healthcare facility, christened the Rockwell Hospital, is poised to be the DHHS’s signature establishment as we move into 2025. As an in-patient acute care hospital, it will partner with other private and public healthcare providers in the Grand Bahama community to cater to local healthcare needs and exceed patient care expectations.

Financial Support and Collaboration

The construction of the Rockwell Hospital is made possible by a collaborative effort between DHHS and RBC Royal Bank (Bahamas) Limited. RBC is providing up to $25 million in financing for the project. The choice of RBC as the preferred financing partner was influenced by their corporate banking experience, deal structuring capabilities, and profound knowledge of the healthcare sector, according to DHHS Chief Financial Officer Dennis Deveaux.

The Freeport Health Campus: A Three-Phase Construction

The construction of the Freeport hospital will be executed in three phases. Phase one involves the establishment of a 60,000 square foot clinic. The second phase involves setting up an in-patient surgical suite and an urgent care facility. The third phase will see the construction of an acute care hospital with 126 in-patient beds.

The need for improved medical facilities in Grand Bahama was highlighted after Hurricane Dorian caused significant damage to Rand Memorial Hospital. The new hospital aims to respond to this need, providing a state-of-the-art facility for residents of the island.

The Oncology Centre and Future Plans

One of the key components of the new hospital will be an oncology centre. This addition will enable residents to receive cancer treatment on the island, eliminating the need for travel to New Providence. Furthermore, plans are in place for the construction of nine new clinics across the Family Islands, while renovations are underway for 41 clinics in the island nation.
